Coils unless they are bad don't need to be replaced, if you are worried about breaking down just carry a spare or two with you, no point in throwing out perfectly good working coils since they might break..

That being said VW is doing a rolling recall soon so you will get them for free once you get your letter. FYI if you didn't get a letter you are not in the system and your vin will not come up as eligible, they are just trying to prevent a rush of people at the dealer.

Sparkplugs, just use stock they are fine, stock gap i believe is .030-.032 range its been a while since I've needed stock gap, i do mine at .028 which is what many people run at as well.

If you don't mind changing plugs every 10K, you can get the NGK BKR6E (Stock PN# 6962) for about $10 for a set of 4.
I just replaced my OEM plugs with these and car runs great and actually seems to have resolved my intermittent start up issues(but I'm still monitoring).

spark plug gap is .9-1.1mm per Bentley manual. thats 0.0354 to .0433 inches.

0.028" comes up alot, i don't know where that comes from.

Any more info on this? Is there a specific VIN range, MY, etc affected or is it a general recall for all of us? If its all of us thats great news, one less thing on my list to replace down the road...

x2, I run those exact NGK plugs gapped at 0.030 and the car has run great on them for the past 10k kms, I am stage 1. Very satisfied with their performance, and they are pretty cheap as well.

My stock plugs were gapped at 0.026-0.027 according to the feeler I used so I gapped the new ones to that spec and haven't had an issue.

That kind of gap on a chipped car or even a stock car after a little bit of wear will give you constant misfires under boost as the spark will not be able to jump the gap. On many cars when the gap is started at a .028 and it slowly opens to .032 or so with wear they are misfiring under boost.

I noticed that as well but believe the manual may be wrong because even my stock Bosch I pulled out were gaped at .031

I gaped my new set of NGK copper plugs at .030 and the car appears to start better/easier.

ok been looking through the bentley manual a little more and it seems to be a typo. the section where it specifies the gap in the spark plug maint section (page 3-38) says .9-1.1 for BPY engine code. however in the ignition system chapter it gives the gaps again (page 28-3) and there it gives two different gap specs, one for each engine code. the TSI is .9-1.1mm and the BPY is .7-.8mm (.7mm = 0.0276")

Thanks for looking into in to it and finding the correct specs in the manual.
I'm making a note on page 3-38 to look at page 28-3 for the proper gap specs.

Read the thread dude... jebus.

0.030 or 0.028 if you're chipped, somewhere around there.

If you buy NGK BKR6E's, they come pre-gapped at 0.030.

No, you read. :)

The gaps appear to vary between .028-.032

Just curious what gap DBCPerformance uses so if I order from them, I know what to expect.
