Whats the difference between coilovers and these?

You can adjust height/shock dampening on coilovers, you can't on those. They are spring/shock set-ups, and the height/dampening level they give you is where they'll stay.

Ok lets say we take adjusting out of the picture.
Do coilovers offer better performance/reliability than these? Im really looking to buy something like this and if I know Im not sacrificing performance I might just go for one of them. Next issue is comfort... |

Cup Kits are just a matched spring/shock/strut setup. If you arent looking for any height adjustability or even dampening then just get the cup kit. Be prepared to want coils after you buy them though. Went through that on my MKIV and 1.3 inches isnt that much plus youll still have some reverse rake.

i was in your shoes about 4 months ago. i was just gonna go with the pro kit that only drops about 1 inch all around. went with coils because the price was close to getting a cupkit. and i honestly am glad i did. ended up lowering my car about 2inches. and i couldn't be happier.
look around see people with the setup you want. i had a friend give me a ride in his car so i could see how the ride felt. do research you can't go wrong either way

There are many ways of looking at the purchase of lowered suspension. Price is one perspective, but even just price shopping you need to honestly determine if you need new shocks when you buy springs. But if you want to lower more than aout 1.5" you should get shocks made for that suspension travel not stock shocks. And unless you are buying some third world questionable quality stuff the price of shock AND springs is going to be close to the price for a set of good coilovers.
So unless you are driving a GTI with less than 10,000 miles AND going for modest lowering of the Eibach Pro Kit springs (about 1.2" drop) you should get shocks and springs. Another thing to consider is you say now that you want "about an inch lower" and you get the springs. Next time you need tires you have a pocket full of cash (Well we can dream) and you get some nice 18" wheels too. But that reverse rake (front higher than the back) that was barely noticable with the old wheels and tires looks silly now. If you had coilovers you spend an hour one week end are set the heigth where you want it. I have a five month old 2009 GTI running stock 17" wheels and tires. I really want to put some nice lightweight wheel on it, but will runn the stock tires until they are used up. Meanwhile I wanted to drop the fron out of the sky and I got Koni coilovers. I like the heigth and the ride is a bit stiffer than stock but not the least bit harsh. I saved the stock parts (only have 1,100 miles on them) for trade some day or to help out someone local with worn out suspension and no cash. There has been a lot of chatter here on this forum about very inexpensive coilovers, and lots of guys have spent their hard earned cash on them and saying they are okay. These are from countries I do not want to support with my cash. I'm not going to get on my soapbox and preach, you all should be smart enough to figure out who you are screwing when you purchase that stuff. |
