Sputtering, flashing engine light, epc light, blue smoke before shut off...
My car went 85,477 miles before doing this to me. The extended service contract ran out at 85,000. I am pretty sure it is a fuel injector stuck wide open. I was surprised to find out how common this is. The car will be taken to the dealer in the am and I will post the results here.
I wonder if they can give me a deal on all 4, and then maybe I should just change them myself.

If an injector was stuck open it would be hard to start, and at idle you will blow black smoke. Like Red said, check your MAF first. Easy enough to do - just unplug it and see if the engine smooths out. If so, replace the MAF. Look for vacuum and pressure leaks. If none, pull your spark plugs. You'll see one plug soaked with fuel if you have an open injector. If not, replace the coils. I assume you changed your plugs at 80K?
Can you get a VAG-COM scan?

It was an injector. I wish I had the tools and time to do it myself, $793 is a bit steep! The car runs like new again!

For one? An injector is about $100 from a dealer. Or did you get them all replaced? Or the valves cleaned?

The injector was $194, the labor was $599. They ran cleaner through the fuel system. Next time, I am either doing it myself or going somewhere else.

That's what sucks for me. All of the good vw shops are an hour away from me. If I ever have an emergency like this I may be screwed.

Is there a community presence near where you live? Thats how we all survived in Az before the scene got big enough to support multiple shops.
