i just had mine installed today. D2C 8000k.

the first one took me almost 2 hours. once i manage to do it, the other side took me less than 10 minutes.

somehow, it's not that blue. it looks like 6000k in real.

I honestly have no idea how it takes you guys so long to do this....

I can do the drivers side bulb removal - and install a new one in less than two min - passenger is even faster.

You do not put the bulb in the cradle first!

You place the bulb in the projector housing, hold it in with one finger then place the cradle on the back of it and snap it in place.

If you guys are trying to balance the bulb in the cradle then install you are doing it wrong.

The socket...note that the cutout is facing down...this is where that covered piece of wire for the bulb goes.

Install in reverse order. I'm not gonna lie its a bitch to get the bulb in with the holder but you should have them together when you put the bulb in the socket, just grip the bulb and steady the holder with your other fingers. There is a TOP marking on the bulb holder so it will be easier to orient it before you try to stick it in heh heh heh...

Great advice and great pics. I would have screwed this up royally on the drivers side had I not followed your instructions and pictures.

I joined this forum just so I could say thanks.

Thanks.

Hey everybody. Grind the two little nubbies off the base of the bulb. It'll now only take you 30 seconds to change out your bulbs.

ALSO, those two little joggles on the bulb are what line it up to the housing. (12 oclock position)

Took me a couple hours to convince my self to do that, them being $100 and all. I am convinced VW does not want people working on there own cars. It's always the easy things that end up being the most difficult on this damn car!

Ordered a pair of 4300 HID bulbs from gothidxenon.com for $69. No tax, free shipping. Bulbs arrived within a week. I called the dealer to get a quote, $245 per bulb. That would have been over $500 out the door for both bulbs...that's around $460 saved.

I was prepared for the removal/replacement to be a pain in the ass, however I was done with both sides in about 20 minutes. Any job where no tools are required is a good one in my book.

For those of you concerned about this I would just suggest that when your removing the orange and black electrical component, and the bulb holder, just pay attention to its orientation so that you have a general idea of how to orient those parts when you are re-installing. Also, once you get the bulb in, be gentle when you are moving the bulb holder into place (i.e. lining it up with the bulb and twisting it into its seated position)

For those of you who are worried to start this DIY. It really isnt that hard once you realize where everything is supposed to line up. When putting the bulb and bulb holder back in place. Make sure these nubs on the bulb and the flat metal piece on the bulb holder line up parallel.

When connecting them back up. From your view, facing the windshield. Have that flat metal piece slightly to the left. Find the groove to slot in and turn clock wise. You may have to wiggle it a little bit. Just remember to lines those two points and it should be a breeze.

no. headlights are always on in US spec GTIs. the only differences are that the rest of your lights turn on as well e.g. city lights, tail lights, etc. This can be changed with vagcom with the optional euro switch.

this DIY was great. I bought stock replacements from ECS. I had to push them in a bit harder in order to get them to twist, but they work like a champ! STICKY...STICKY...STICKY!!!

Resurrect to say thanks for the DIY. Took me about 3 minutes on the driver's side....why is it taking people an hour or 2 hours to change a bulb? LOL.

Now I'm debating between 3300K and 5000K....
