My goal is to make a streetable track car. At some point, I'll be doing a 16V swap. I still need to go through the car, to figure out what's good, and what needs to be replaced etc. The previous owner gave me boxes upon boxes of extra parts that he yanked from a parts car of his... so I need to sort through those, figure out what I want to keep and what can be sold for seed money.

Cool
The car shouldn't sit like that, unless it's all the shit in the back. Let me know if you need any more motor spares.

It's go two sets of back seats folded up, and other components from the parts car... so yea, it is sporting some reverse rake at the moment.

looks pretty clean, I loves my 84. I got a suggestion for the 16v swap that should be cheaper and better, consider a 16v head on an ABA, really seems to work out really nice in most cases. Heh I have an 84 that I was planning on building the shit out of but I've come to the conclusion my boosted 2.5 is gonna wind up finished first as I had no idea how close I am to building exactly what I wanted out of my MKV. Anyways the body on my 84 is clean but not pristine so I'm in the midst of shaving all but the door handles, my plan is to take a g60 syncro tranny from a b3 passat to go awd and build an aba/16v turbo with bahn brenners serial killa kit. Let me know if you need any advice. I'll leave you with a pretty handy link. http://www.rabbitgtipage.com/Swaps/engineswaps.html
oh and VR6 isn't worth the extra effort over the aba/16v frankenstein, more weight, requires chasis modification to hold the extra weight not to mention you can squeeze 400whp out of the aba/16v with a t3/t4 turbo and more out of the same setup if you build a stroker with a TDI crank. Megasquirt standalone is your friend but the only place you should go for it is. http://www.diyautotune.com

whats your starting issue like, I've had 2 MKI GTIs and I can honestly say CIS injection engines aren't exactly the easiest things to get started. 1st one I had, looked about like yours needed new injectors. I had to crank and find a balance, couldn't let it idle for 30 sec or it would stall but giving it much gas before it had a second to warm up and it would stall. The engine in the one I have now is solid, some previous owner did the 2.0 digi headswap but kept it on CIS, needs a waterpump gasket but thats pretty much all thats wrong under the hood. So I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume your motor mounts aren't in good shape.

mine does the same but I as I mentioned before somebody popped in a built digi 2.0 head and the cam on mine looks rather rediculous. Wish I knew what degree they were. None the less you might be interested in popping the valve cover off, it only lakes a minute to do and valve cover gaskets are like $5. I've been all over fixing stuff on my 1.8 and I've come to the conclusion that the head and cams are causing this issue for me. Only potential issues that may be causing this on mine that I haven't addressed is the idle and WOT switches aren't hooked up on my TB. Anyways most of these cars seem to be significantly modded so its look a peek to see if you have an aggressive cam. I will also say I usually have to give the car a good few revs on a cold start to keep it from stalling, watch your voltage guage while starting if yours still has it.

Update:
Got some temporary new tires. I don't plan on keeping the snowflakes, but the current tires were badly dry rotted and I'd like to be able to drive it around for a little before I really dig in and start stripping everything. I also removed the hideous US spec. front and rear bumpers... really cleans up and modernizes the look of the car. The most notable update, however, is that I just ordered a welder: a millermatic 140. I would have liked to have gotten a 230V welder, but I have a detached garage... and I'd have to get the power company to run a 230 line in. Anyway, I will be posting more updates soon. |

Minor updates:
Still haven't started the body work, but it's just a matter of time. The rear interior of the car has been completely stripped, sound deadening and all. Also got a few goodies, including a mint momo competition wheel (I installed it to mock up my new seat supports), and some H&R ultra lows. I've been going back and forth as to whether or not I still want to convert to single round, the more integrated I become into the MK1 community the more I want to keep the late westy look. I love the look of single rounds, but I like the idea of keeping as much original sheet metal as possible. Anyway, the obligatory pics for clicks will follow. Removing sound deadening (so fun). Before: ![]() During (dry ice method): ![]() After (so clean): ![]() ![]() New stuff: ![]() (mmm... ultra lows)
