The bored at home / COVID19 / Working from home thread

I can't say laying off hospital employees makes sense in the middle of a pandemic. Usually seems like unnecessary layoffs result in a pay raise for the CEOs. Hopefully it's not because of greed...but it normally is.

I'm not sure what our boat dealership is going to look like long term. Right now we're actually in a pretty good position, but as stock has dwindled into nothing I wonder if it'll hurt us long term. We typically have 45-50 boats in stock, but with nobody traveling, cruise ships cancelled, and theme parks closed, the only thing you can really do to get away from it all is go boating. Our stock that we'd normally be selling for the rest of the year is completely gone. 2021 models started arriving 2-3 weeks ago and we already only have about 5 2020s left. All of the 2021s coming in are sold until Oct-Nov.

A lot of my job revolves around the inventory, so with no inventory I've pretty much just been coming to work and spending my day on the internet. It's boring af, but I guess I can't complain. We all figured business would be dead and we'd be desperate to make some sales, instead the opposite happened.

Most rural, non profit hospitals barely get by. With outpatient services limited, they're losing money hand over fist. At one point, we were losing a million a day of revenue. If this doesn't get worse, those layoffs allowed the system to break even for the year, which for a hospital our size means that we'll be behind $15 to 20 million in capital expenditures next year, which are needed to keep the equipment and facility up to date. Unfortunately, it's going to get worse. I'll be ok, I'm retired military and I've already told my boss she can move me from FTE to a consultant, to trim the operational budget, and move my hours to the project centers of my projects, but it's going to get ugly for a lot more people when we have to stop outpatient surgeries and other outpatient services.

Hospitals are lucky to see 4% profit margins in a good year, most rural operate in the negative. Pharmacies operate about 4% also, as do insurance companies. Pharma operates between 10 and 22%. The real costs of health care are Americans terrible health, specialists pay, lack of primary care providers (pushing more care to specialists), pharma and uncompensated care.

Good thing schools are still planning on opening and people still have an irrational hate towards masks. This'll all be over soon.

I work in the medical device industry.

I went back to work today but I wonder why I'm here since there is zero demand for our products and we can't even get some raw materials.

Plus it sucks wearing a mask all day but it's still better than unemployment.

Our schools aren't really re-opening. 1-2 days a week + remote learning the rest of the time or you can opt into 100% remote learning.
NY still doesn't have a clue on how to reopen. If possible, we will opt for remote this year.

Better than dying or causing someone else's death too.

Today's my first day back in the office since March, been working from home. We're split in 2 groups and doing 2 weeks in the office, 2 weeks at home for the foreseeable future. IL is starting to spike though, so we may end up going back home again who knows. My boss is getting a ton of flak for doing this when it's not really essential we be in the office.

I fully expect the execution on the remote option to be an absolute train wreck 🤣

We're opting into it though, and one of us will work from home. Not like either my wife or I have gotten any indication we're returning to work.

I'm in FL where science is a fallacy and where you get to go to class after visiting disney world for the weekend.

We literally just had someone in the office stop by to look at a boat and when the salesman offered them some hand sanitizer they said they aren't into covid. They also said they just flew into town. I couldn't help but yell 'fuckin retards' after they left.

This is essentially most of florida right now...

Someone my cousin works with tested positive and she was told to quarantine for 14 days because she was exposed to them. So, what would be the logical thing to do? Drive to FL for vacation, of course.

We are not laying off yet, but haven’t had work in my job line for months. Been doing special case reviews too find errors and/or missed things. So still “busy”. Thankfully I have 16yrs seniority in a work force that is predominantly sub 10yrs.

more important, I collect a decent disability pension, so as long as that holds up, we’ll be just fine.

my wife’s work is crazy busy and she’s pushing to get her furloughed worker back so they can do more.

There’s a chance my job hangs in the balance of what happens to the college football season this year. My position is not directly tied to revenue generation (sales) but that team is much less effective without me. I cringe after each conference cancellation and I would be naive to think that the P5 conferences aren’t far behind....

As much as AD’s, coaches, and University presidents want to play, chancellors, governors, and lawyers are going to make the final decisions based on risk tolerance.

• How many kids will probably get infected?
• How many of those will suffer unknown chronic issues, or just die?
• How much money would we lose from not having a season (or on-campus students)?
• How much money would we lose in lawsuits if we do and people get sick/die?

I honestly had no idea how ignorant much of this country is.
