Alternative to RNS-510 Navigation/Bluetooth...

This is from a "satisfied" (?) RNS buyer.....

Sensis/Telstra provide the mapping data for most of the GPS manufacturers, they all suffer from the incompetence of Sensis/Telstra inability to manage to provide accurate data. Hardly a VW fault that the mapping data is not accurate.

As for the calculation of time and distance this is also reliant on the maps and there is also an option to adjust this and how it calculates in the setup.

I really don't see him being unhappy with the unit but unhappy with the maps.

What evidence do you have to support that they are licensed? Ask any of the sellers and they won't directly answer and are vague about the specifics. Like most of the equipment like this that comes out of the smaller factories in China with no brand name attached they use pirated software as it means more profit for them and they can keep there prices down.
You haven't answered my question. You stated that the software was not original and was unlicensed. I was asking "how do you know this?" I was not saying "Mav...you're a fucking wanker and have no idea what you are talking about." I was inquiring if you knew or could provide evidence that clearly shows these units are non-compliant in a legal software manner. That is all.

I don't recall equipping my car with non OEM parts??
In your sig...you state that you have
2008 MY08 Golf GTI | Candy White | 5 Door | DSG | Anthracite Leather | VW/Skoda Integrated Bluetooth with Voice Assist | Darkest Legal Tint | RNS510 | APR 80 duro Torque Arm Insert | ducoscratch paint protection film | OEM Sharan Rubber Antenna Replica | Eurobadgez (f&r) | Osram Night Breaker +90 | Vag Com (VCDS) | Xenon interior lights | golfmkv.com stickers
are these available from your local VW Dealership as OEM warrantied parts?

I really don't see him being unhappy with the unit but unhappy with the maps.
Agreed....it's not entirely the fault of the RNS...but the software (maps) supplied. So..because we shouldn't do anything illegal...my question remains unanswered. How much for the map updates for the RNS (from VW). Have you enquired about that? Also..what warranty is available on an aftermarket purchase of an RNS? I am still considering the options.

I'm only a stupid RNS510 owner so what would I know. You can do your own research here.

Is that all you've got? A torque insert, paint protection film, eudobadgez and headlight globes. You do realise that VW don't make globes, paint protection film, torque inserts or eurobadges?

And I've never said that non OEM stuff is no good, I've said that the non OEM headunits don't integrate as well which is a fact.

The map updates are in the order of $400-500. I didn't say we shouldn't do anything illegal and I have no intention of buying map updates. My comments were directed at someone who was saying that map updates are $500 on the RNS510 but FREE on the Chinese specials which is not a fair comparison when the RNS510 maps are available for download as well.

The RNS510 comes with a 2 year warranty if purchased from the spare parts counter, generally 1 year from other sellers or from overseas. 3 years if purchased with the car (which VW are making hard with restrictive supplies of these).

Is that all you have got? Come on Mav...a simple question...asking for your reasoning...but I guess it's just easier to rely on stereotypical "bullshit" than actually seek out the facts. You never know, the truth may just ruin a good story.

True...you never said non-OEM wasn't any good, but your soap box stance on the RSN certainly delivered the message that anything less than the OEM part was simply not worthy. I think I have made my point.

So..after spending $2.5k on the RNS, I am expected to fork out another $500 (approximate...maybe more..actually, if it is a VW item, IT WILL BE MORE), when the roads change, suburbs develop etc etc. At least with Garmin, I can get a map from them for our portable GPS for (approximately) $120.00...

Anyway...I'm off to detail the R with some non-VW car cleaner.

Guys stop it - you're ruining a thread that once used to be a valuable resource but is now cluttered with your childish bickering. Give it up.

Ask any of the sellers if the navigation software is legal, all of them will not answer. Ask them how the navigation software comes and they will say on a SD card. Ask them for another type and they will offer to supply that instead. They don't supply any licenses for the software, nor anything printed. I'm sure that some of the Australian purchasers can tell you this. Also check the windows ce "about" screen, 4.2 still had the area where the manufacturer would put their name if the ce was licensed.

Take a look at the source of the units, they're coming out of small factories that sell through places like ebay, there's a reason why you don't see them being sold out of stores and large chains (other then the interface and the changing spec on the units all the time) and this is because they don't have licensed software as this would add $100+ per unit.

True...you never said non-OEM wasn't any good, but your soap box stance on the RSN certainly delivered the message that anything less than the OEM part was simply not worthy. I think I have made my point.

There's plenty of times where there are better options then OEM depending on what it is, suspension is one area. I just don't believe that the after market head units integrate well enough, if the after market head units would get together and come up with a standard for passing things like mp3 tags, controls and navigation instructions around they could create interfaces for the canbus for example and allow mp3 tags and so forth to be sent via the canbus and the steering wheel controls to be sent via the canbus rather then additional adapters.

I like many of the features on the after market head units like divx support, better playlists and so forth but find the interfaces to be pretty average. It's easy to not realise how much the factory units integrate into the cars, VW have added new features this year with the reverse camera system working through there (won't work with after market), park assist displaying on there and the mfd, reverse sensors displaying on there and being able to adjust the sound of the reverse and now the AC controls are going to display on the RNS510.

You get the maps with the unit generally. And you can also modify BMW maps for example to work on there.

I don't agree with the map pricing but one of the problems is that Telstra/Sensis are involved and a lot of that pricing comes from them because of the low volume nature of the VW systems.

Anyway...I'm off to detail the R with some non-VW car cleaner.

I think you guys should stop having a stab at each other and leave this thread for useful info .
Yes , People would love a RNS510 , but the price is hi . Thats why these units are an "alternative" , price comes with the glitches . Each person has different needs and different banks accounts.

Re. Alternative maps for the RNS-510... as well as being able to modify BMW maps to work on the unit, from what I've read on vwnavi.com, the Holden maps also work and are about half the price!

Hi,

Does anyone tried to connect 16 gb usb memory stick to usb port? Tried my but nothing happens apart of vw logo comes up and unit freezes. Tried 128 mb and this one works ok. Also 16 gb works ok anywhere else. Is it any size limit for usb sticks?

Cheers
Alex

For the same reason that memory sticks won't work on some computers, it may be that you try another type of memory stick (different brand or different type in the same brand) and check the formatting of that memory stick as the units may only read FAT32 formatted for example. Depends on the unit really so check the specs if possible and if not just trial and error.
